Introducing the Author

Reg Quist

Reg Quist is the grandson of homesteading pioneers. From the soddy that was home to his grandparents, to the family farms and ranches of the modern era, the Quist family have had an attachment to the land. Although Reg was raised in a small city the family photo albums testify to how often he found himself sitting on a horse, both as a child and into later life, when he and his wife owned their own small farm complete with kids and horses.
As a child of the Great Depression and World War II, Reg grew to adulthood in the 1950’s. Travelling and working over many parts of his native Alberta, British Columbia and the Yukon in heavy construction, oilfields and farms, left him with a great appreciation of what the past generations had accomplished. Both his maternal and paternal grandparents were Alberta pioneers. They experienced the sod shacks, the prairie fires, the home births, and the near starvation. But through that process they built a future for the following generations.
Reg’s parents started their married lives in the midst of the Depression. He says, “I am a part of the first generation to truly enjoy the fruits of the labors of the pioneers. My parents and their neighbors worked incredibly hard, and it is well for us to remember”.
Reg was always an avid reader with the desire to write. In his young years the responsibilities of work, business and family had to take precedence, but in retirement the stories that lay dormant all those years are being put on paper.
Reg’s writing interests have lead into many genres including children’s work, short lifestyle stories, cowboy poetry and Christian articles. But it is the Western that has become primary.
While recognizing that there was a certain amount of confrontation and violence in the pioneer West, it is the basic goodness of the pioneers, their brutally hard work, their sacrifice, the looking to the future, their spiritual soundness and their hopes for their children and their grandchildren that Quist tells about. Having witnessed these very attributes in his own family and culture, and, as much as humanly possible, has lived them himself, Quist is able to bring his characters to life.
